Walk-in candidates may be accepted at the discretion of the testing center, if space is available; scheduled applicants will receive priority when testing. Unscheduled applicants (walk-ins) must have completed an online application prior to arrival or may complete an online application, in a Department of Personnel office, prior to the beginning of the testing session; allow at least 20 minutes.
DMV+ Job Testing Opportunities
The Secretary of State wants to make it easier for you to be considered for employment with the Office. Testing for certain titles, that require an applicant to take and pass a written, multiple-choice test, may be available in DMV+ facilities. The Office will offer job testing opportunities at the DMV facilities listed below. We hope that offering testing at these locations, as well as the Secretary of State Personnel Offices in Chicago and Springfield, will make it easier for people who want to work for our Office.
Testing is by appointment ONLY*. All appointments MUST be made within 48 hours of the scheduled test date (No walk-ins accepted). Please call for available dates and to schedule appointments.

The Physical Services Department is responsible for property management of the buildings that comprise the State Capitol Complex and surrounding area in Springfield, as well as primary and secondary support to the maintenance of Secretary of State Buildings throughout the State of Illinois. As custodians of the Capitol Complex and Secretary of State offices and the operator of its' own power plant, the work performed by the department is multifaceted from the provider of power, maintenance of state properties, control over Secretary of State vehicles, handle construction and maintenance projects throughout the State, provides yard and custodial services to the offices, and handles special events for the Capital Complex. This position, with administrative support, supervises, directly and indirectly more than 300 employees.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Directs, plans, organizes and evaluates through subordinate management personnel, the activities of the divisions: Administrative (which includes Fiscal and Personnel Liaison), Custodial/Special Events, Mailing and Shipping, Warehouse, Planning and Development, Construction and Maintenance and Engineering; engaged in the physical maintenance and improvement of the Capitol Complex and other facilities utilized by the office of the Secretary of State throughout the State.
Coordinates and directs activities for Physical Services in three Chicago locations.
Directs public relations, personnel management and budgetary management functions for the Department; negotiates with bargaining agents of organized labor for employees within the Department; establishes and maintains working relationships with other local union officials.
Meets and works with subordinate management staff and/or management of other departments to coordinate program activities and resolve administrative or operational problems.
Implements and formulates policies and procedures for the department.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
Requires Bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years experience managing a large operation, with four (4) years experience in the construction and maintenance field; OR any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to carry out the duties of the position. Experience with state government and state projects preferred, but not required.
